Francesco Rubino is Professor of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at King’s College London and Consultant Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London UK.
His clinical expertise includes laparoscopic bariatric, metabolic and upper digestive surgery. His research interests focus on mechanisms of action of gastrointestinal surgery and the role of the gut in type 2 diabetes.
He will be leading our panel of experts in addressing the issue of Obesity-The Science and the stigma attached to obesity due to misconceptions and bias in the society and interestingly amongst healthcare professionals.
Prof.Rubino believes fat stigma is intimately related to our understanding of what causes Obesity which in turn restrict the chances of access to innovative treatment for this group of patients.
In 2004, a study by Dr. Rubino provided the first experimental evidence that the anti-diabetes effect of certain bariatric procedures, particularly gastric bypass surgery, results from mechanisms beyond weight loss. He has also been the PI and Co-PI of randomized clinical trials investigating the outcomes of a surgical approach for type 2 diabetes.
He is the author and co-author of many scientific publications, including in prestigious scientific journals such as Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, Diabetes Care and Annals of Surgery. He has given hundreds of presentations at major scientific conferences around the world.
