Sir Michael Rawlins GBE Kt MD FRCP FMedSci
Sir. Rawlins will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from Zenith Global Health for his contributions and commitment to health and upholding excellence in his services to the safety of medicine, healthcare and innovation at their 4th.awards ceremony in London.
Sir Michael is a physician-scientist who combined a career as a professor of clinical pharmacology and general physician at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1973 until 2006. He undertook clinical pharmacology research, taught undergraduates and postgraduate medical students and cared for patients with general medical conditions, in this capacity.
He undertook a number of national activities, most notably
- Chairmanship of the Committee on the Safety of Medicines(1992-1998)
- Chairmanship of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs(1998-2008)
Sir. Michael was the founding Chair of National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE)An organisation established to provide guidance to the UK’s National Health Service(NHS)on whether new or existing pharmaceutical products should be available to patients seeking care from the service and for developing clinical guidelines so that NHS professionals could provide their patients with the highest attainable quality of care.
His leadership have contributed to NICE acquiring a high reputation internationally as a role model for the development of clinical guidelines, ensure fairness and cost-effectiveness.
Sir Michael was in office from 1999 till 2013.
On his Lifetime Achievements Award, Sir Michael said ‘I am delighted to accept this award from Zenith Global Health and look forward to the awards ceremony’.
Sir Michael was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the order of British Empire (GBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours after more than 3 decades at the forefront of innovation, development and leadership in the public sector.
Sir Michael was President of the Royal Society of Medicine, he demitted office in 2014.
He has from 1st. December 2014 been chair of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
